School Programmes

"Out-of-school fieldwork provides an exciting and authentic dimension to students’ learning experiences. It also takes the teacher and students out of the predictable classroom environment and into new settings" (Ontario Curriculum)

The Educational Programmes at the Lundy’s Lane Historical Museum are excitingly new. Programmes cross the curriculum, combining subjects in different ways so that more than history or social studies is covered. Each programme incorporates several different features, to be mixed and matched by the teacher (e.g., this topic with that craft/activity; number of activities going on at any given time; units to be covered), depending on the level, age, and size of the group.

Some programmes may even be taken into the schools.

WAR OF 1812

What were the reasons for the War of 1812? What happened here in Niagara?

Students view a video telling of three local battles – Queenston, Chippawa and Lundy's Lane, discuss the uniform and accoutrements of a British soldier, and learn about the Battle of Lundy's Lane.

In good weather they will march up to the battlefield to discuss the events of July 25, 1814.

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

What was the Underground Railroad? What kind of person would be involved in the Underground Railroad? How did refugees know where to go? With the Underground Railroad Game, teams of students "become" a character trying to make it to Niagara on the Underground Railroad. Decisions have to be made, consequences of those decisions have to be abided; a game of wits and chance — not all will make it!

Designed to appeal to Grade: 7
Time: 1.5 Hours
Cost: $2.50 per student

WORK AND PLAY

In pioneer times, everyone in the family, from the dog and cat up to Grandfather had a job to do. If you were an early settler on a farm, what kind of work do you think would have had to be done? But was life all work? Talk about social activities. Students engage in work and play activities.

Alternate emphasis: What do you throw away? If you were an early settler living on a farm, what might you throw away? What kinds of things do you use again? The pioneers used and reused things much more than we do today. Discussions involve the necessity of reusing materials that were not as easily replaced as they are today. What kinds of things can be used again for a different purpose? Students create a craft using recycled materials.
