What is the Project?

LUNDY'S LANE BATTLEFIELD LEGACY PROJECT

This project will create a Legacy Gift to commemorate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the Battle of Lundy's Lane in the City of Niagara Falls. It will honour the significant impact left by these events on the City as well as the development of Canada as a nation. The major part of the project involves the capital expansion and renovation of the Lundy's Lane Historical Museum, a designated historical structure built in 1874. It includes upgrading the existing building to current standards of accessibility and display, and creating a Visitor Centre for the War of 1812 and the Battle of Lundy's Lane in Niagara Falls. Further development of the Lundy's Lane Battlefield National Historic site, resulting in increased pedestrian access, improvements to interpretive trails and battlefield signage, parking and open space are a related part of this total project. A signature Gateway/Walkway will join two sides of the battlefield currently bisected by a major roadway, symbolizing 200 years of peace between Canada and the United States. Overall, this project will create an all-inclusive visitor experience on the Lundy's Lane Battlefield that merges the community's historical museum, a Battlefield Visitor Centre, self-guided walking trails, the Battle Ground Hotel Museum and battlefield landmarks. This $12 million project will be financed through a federal/provincial/municipal partnership. The Board of Museums is conducting its own capital fundraising campaign of $2 million to provide half of the municipal share. Construction will begin in early 2010 and be operational by June 2012, the beginning of the War of 1812 Bicentennial celebrations.

Lundy’s Lane Battlefield

Just imagine taking an educational adventure through the Lundy’s Lane Battlefield.
• arrive at the Visitor Centre located in the expanded and renovated Lundy’s Lane Historical Museum
• view a video about “the bloodiest battle of the War of 1812 and a turning point in our country’s history”
• visit the Museum’s Battle of Lundy’s Lane Gallery and view one of the most significant collections of War of 1812 artifacts available anywhere
• armed with a self-guiding map, embark on a series of walking trails throughout the Battlefield
• stop from time to time to learn more about the Battle from the interpretive signage installed along the way
• meander through the Drummond Hill Cemetery, once the location of some of the fiercest fighting during the Battle and now the site of a national memorial commemorating the activities which took place some 200 years ago
• cross over Lundy’s Lane on a new signature walkway/gateway which joins two sides of the Battlefield currently bisected by the roadway
• visit the restored Battle Ground Hotel Museum, “the only surviving example, in Ontario, of a 19th century Tavern which existed as a product of the commemoration of the War of 1812 and as an element of early Ontario tourism”
• wander through Redmond Heights, a significant part of the Battlefield which was preserved by former resident Ruth Redmond who once owned the land.
